First Graduates of Our PhD Program

New year has come with good news to İYTE-MBG community! On 5-6 January 2015, first students of İYTE-MBG PhD Program have defended their PhD theses successfully. On 5th of January, Ayşe Banu Demir (Koç Lab) defended her thesis titled “Identification of Doxorubicin Drug Resistance Mechanisms by Using Genomic Techniques” in the conference hall, which was dedicated a year ago to her late grandfather Prof. İbrahim Demir, a renowned Turkish plant geneticist. On 6th of January, Aysun Adan Gökbulut and Melis Kartal Yandım (Baran Lab) and defended their theses titled “Therapeutic Potentials of Fisetin, Hesperetin, and Vitexin on Chronic Myeloid Leukemia and Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells” and “Expression Levels of Bioactive Sphinolipid Genes in Newly Diagnosed and Drug-Resistant Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Patients and Their Impact on the Clinical Progress”, respectively. Upon deposition of certified copy of their theses, these three young women will be the first graduates of İYTE-MBG PhD Program.

İYTE-MBG PhD Program received first students in 2009 in addition to the MSc Program that has started earlier. Students in İYTE-MBG MSc and PhD Programs are involved in research projects in the fields of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, plant biochemistry and genetics, cancer biology, redox biology, immunology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, and structural biology.
